They didn't punch your car ticket when you were riding the cowcatcher up Market street. During the war years the streetcars were all so crowded you could hang on the outside step or ride the cowcatcher. At each stop we would jump off and run up to the next car and get on. After 5 or 6 changes like that you could make pretty good time getting home. By the time you would get to Castro and the tunnel you usually could get inside and the conducter would punch your carticket.
