THE BIG SHAKE OF 1957

FROM THE JOURNAL OF ALIDA PEARSON- MARCH 22 1957

Monday afternoon, a brilliant mild day, going to

the library then to the park and a brief trip via

the Acquarium Remembering the big shake of march 22

1957 was working that day at Norberg co first tremor came
while taking citation from Mr Cox around 1030 am it was

very light the great shock came later at 1145am was
sitting at desk waiting for it to subside when it did
not arose and went and stood in doorway thinking of tom

and visualsing the city of paris as sturdily built

turned out he was at Bardelli's having an early lunch

unable to get through on phone tremors all afternoon

when tom called said there was damage out in stonestown

and westlake the smell of gas as i entered apt that night

phone also ringing it was dad the reports they got (from

new york ) made it sound as like the city had all but fallen into the sea tom coming in 5 minutes after i hung up

opening windows to let the gas smell out taking our food

and going to the williamson's and cooking it -at 1215

a heavy shake came tom coming to comfort me on sofa i was

worried the way the lamps shook on the end table
