On the old PCC streetcars through the Twin Peaks tunnel, sometimes you would get a driver who was practicing for the Indianapolis 500. The driver (aka “motorman”) would reach hair-raising speeds, which I believe were in the 50-60 mph range. Of course, the rest of the trip, both before and after the tunnel, was stop-and-go driving on the street. So the total elapsed time of your trip didn’t change much. Still, with the “thrill ride” through the tunnel, you arrived home probably two or three seconds early.
