West Portal Station

Yikes. I just watched the History Minute video about the West Portal station. That's a nasty structure!

I haven't been to West Portal since, oh, 1967 when I stopped taking the streetcar to SI so I've never seen that weird canopy erected over the western entrance to the Twin Peaks Tunnel. I guess it seemed like a good idea to someone at sometime back in the 1970s. (It's sort of the architectural version of paisley body shirts and fuschia colored bell bottoms for men.)

Please tell me the original Beaux Arts portal is still preserved somewhere behind that facade -- please.
