When the 1957 quake hit, I was working on a tabulating machine at the SF Harbor Board offices in the Ferry Building. The old building seemingly was all over the place, but the knowledge that it had survived the "big one,"was comforting. I did not hear any "pre-shake" noise because at that time they were busy building the idiotic Embarcadero Freeway, and the pile driver drowned out everything. I didn't realize the severity of the shake until I walked up Market Street and saw most of the picture windows scattered along the sidewalk..
