A fantastic recount of Thanksgivings spent in the Outsidelands which brought back a lot of memories. Most "everyday" meals at our house were eaten from tv trays in the living room while watching the news, Bonanza, or whatever was on at the time. But Thanksgiving meals were a time when we actually were seated around the old Duncan 5 dining room table where conversation and some storytelling from past experiences of my parents were told. As far back as I can remember I always ate the whole leg (drumstick & thigh) as one piece of turkey along with mountains of stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, and yes a helping from the canned Ocean Spray cranberry sauce. I must agree with Frank about the sweet potatos as I never liked all the variations of cooking them with marshmellows or some other syrupy substance. They are best baked whole like a regular potato and smothered in butter...I can feel my arteries hardening just thinking about it.
