I touched Alcatraz Island in the mid 1930s. That was less than a year after that place was strengthened into that well known federal prison. I was on an outing with the YMCA and we were on our way to Angel Island. The small boat on which we were traveling had to make a stop at the federal prison to make a delivery. We were all told to go below deck, I don't know exactly why but that was the order.

At that time, the real bad guys were there, Machine Gun Kelly, Bird Man of Alcatraz, and, of course, Al Capone, among many others.

The next time I visited Alcatraz was in the late 1980s when the prison was open for tours. I will never forget either of these trips.
