Hi Karen. I'll jump in here since I also worked at the historic ships at Hyde Street Pier. (Like Judy, I've got green blood too.)

You and I missed crossing paths at Hyde Street by a couple of years, though, since I started there in January 1977 as part of the NPS team that came aboard during the transfer from State Parks to Golden Gate NRA.

I also remember the unique smell of the lowest deck of Balclutha: a mixture of bilge water, rust, old cordage, and Stockholm tar. Hey, it's a historic odor!
