Hey Patrick,

Those zoris became popular at Kelly's Cove in the early '70s.
No doubt they were first brought back to the mainland by surfers returning from the Islands.
For locals a trip down Geary Blvd. to Japan Town would provide a good selection.
I too had them in Hawaii when I worked aboard some charter sailboats.
A grody pair for deck & dockside and cleaner pair for sprucing up on special
occasions.

Whoops! It's my turn again for the ping pong table at Marin Town and Country Club.
Gotta go back to the late 1950's.
