No - I built only sand castles of the ordinary kind both at the beach and in a part of our backyard that had been left sandy. I did make some large ones, but they were not art.
The first time I ever saw the true sand "art" was as a small child walking with my mother on the south side of Market, where someone had brought in a large amount of sand and built some religious figures, outside the entrance to either a store or a theatre. I was just amazed at how complex they were and could not see how they did not fall over. They were so good that I still recall seeing them. I believe it was a Nativity scene, with farm animals, but can't remember that for sure.
In the area where I live now (New Jersey) people build elaborate sand castles and figures. I have never seen them being constructed so I have no idea how it's done.
