Yes indeed. In my teens I bought a .22 bolt action rifle there. Back in the 40's. Not very expensive in those days. I think that guns were made even more popular by the action filled war movies of the day. Not much thought about the inherent dangers of such devices.
There used to be a quarry down the San Mateo coast way where informal, kind of free for all target practice would take place. Safety for the shooters depended on the self awareness of the folks taking part. Don't know how long the practice lasted until it became illegal.
