Hi W.M. The 41st anniversary of the establishment of GGNRA was on October 27. That's the date in 1972 when Richard Nixon signed “An Act to Establish the Golden Gate National Recreation Area,” (Public Law 92-589).

HOWEVER, of equal importance was Saturday, October 26, which marked 40 years to the day when we first offered tours of Alcatraz Island to the public on October 26, 1973.

The now-aging rangers held a reunion on the island to commemorate the event, and about 70 rangers, maintenance, and admin types were in attendance.
