Re: Sergeant Sunshine

It wasn't Sergeant Sunshine, but likely his clone who we encountered one Saturday night in 1971.

We were headed for the Fillmore West, circling the block near old Commerce High looking for street parking, when a cop car pulled us over (probable cause? five long-hairs in a beat up Chevy). Officer #1 asked my buddy the driver for his license and registration while we huddled in back, visions of the Hall of Justice dancing in our heads.

As officer #1 checked IDs officer #2 leaned into the smoke-filled back seat, inhaled deeply, and said "you boys have a safe night" and waved us off.

Had it been another city, another state, or another time, my life might have been quite different.
