City Directories exist for San Francisco from the time of the Gold Rush until 1982 when the annual compilation of info came to an end. They can be used to track both homeowners AND apartment residents, businesses (sometimes with the names/addresses of owners), schools, houses of worship, etc. For about the last 30 years of publication, the directories also included a reverse look-up section so that you can see the names of all the neighbors, block by block, across the entire City. It's a great resource, and someday historians will lament the fact that the annual publication of these books ended nearly 35 years ago. Here's a link to the SFPL site:
