Re: Memories

In pursuing my relations in the City directories I noticed that one side of the family (who lived in the Richmond) was remarkably stable, staying at the same address for over thirty years.

By contrast, the other side of the family wasn't as well to do and most lived in the Excelsior. Several of these folks moved every year or two, sometimes only a few doors down the street or just around the corner. I can only suppose they were chasing ever-elusive lower rents or bigger flats.

It's also interesting to note who was living at the addresses. In many cases, children would disappear from the directories for years at a time, only to reappear again living with their parents. This was especially true during the Depression.
