Re: A Milestone

Frankly, I think it would be far more appropriate to reflect on Caen's journalistic contributions, which were a HUGE part of the joy of living in "Baghdad By The Bay." Reading Caen's column while enjoying one's morning coffee was a MUST. A regular remark, often heard in my Parkside neighborhood was, "Did you read what Caen wrote about [fill in the blank] today???"

Bill German, then-editor of the Chron, delivered one of the eulogies at Mr. Caen's memorial service at Grace Cathedral.

Part of it:
..."the day Herb died, we Chronicle editors held a press conference for the rest of the media who had been bombarding us with questions about Herb.
"What do you intend to do about replacing Caen?" someone shouted.
No-nonsense Executive Editor Matt Wilson answered with no hesitation for all of us. "We have no plans. Caen is simply irreplaceable."

That pretty much says it all.
