I believe that it was the Free Masons and the Oddfellows that had initiation rights that include real human bones. Some people were given skulls and others were given skeletons. They were given these and had to keep them for the rest of their lives. Some people would proudly put them in their rooms or even on their desks like they were trophies other people didn't want anyone seeing them so they hid them. I think that that is where the term skeletons in the closet comes from because a lot of Free Masons had skeletons in the closet.
