I am impressed that you remember the actual name of one of the Parkside librarians you knew back in 1954!!
Yeah, getting a library card in our 'hood was a big deal back in those days.
As an adult, and while reading Stephen King's "Hearts In Atlantis" - the lead character, Bobby Garfield, gets a library card from his (sometimes very screwed-up) Mom as a birthday gift, which thrilled him. I could not relate to Liz Garfield, Screwed-Up Mom, but I COULD relate to my memories of thinking that having a library card was a true treasure, just like Bobby did.
