One year I was working on a project for the NPS at Arlington House, which, as you all know, was the Custis-Lee mansion in Arlington, VA. It now sits in the middle of Arlington National Cemetery.
My usual commute to the house consisted of walking up the hill through the cemetery each morning. At day's end, I'd walk down. I happened to be there during the week of Memorial Day. The day before, I walked up the hill in the morning as per usual. When I walked down at the end of the day, every grave had a flag. The Boy Scouts had been there. Think about the thousands and thousands of graves there. It was an incredibly moving thing to see.
