June 6, 1944 = D-Day - the Sixth of June = Allied invasion of Europe - Normandy

Thanks for remembering, Candis. Two years ago there were ceremonies over in France marking the 70th anniversary and there are still many of us who will always remember that date as the beginning of the end. December 7, 1941 was the beginning for the U.S. and August 6, 1945 saw the blow that would bring World War II to an end.

I was just finishing the seventh grade, my first year at Presidio Junior High. I was looking forward to a lazy summer, not knowing that on that same morning my Dad sailed west from England, heading across the Atlantic on the Queen Mary, converted to a hospital ship, headed for New York and home.

As the first few days went by we began to realize the size and scope of this invasion - and the difficulties that were faced and the cost in lives lost and battle wounded. As the many years went by our appreciation of the valor shown by our young men and those of our allies kept growing. We will not forget.

We also learned, to our dismay, the fighting doesn't ever seem to be over.
