Thanks Paul J. for your excellent input...a good history lesson.
I still remember, as an adult, learning that Fra Junipero Serra was not exactly the pious hero pro-religious historians painted him to be. He wasn't particularly nice to the indians who originally lived on the lands he built his missions on - and then "converted" these hapless souls, which did not go toward improving their lots in any way, shape or form.
Yes, that summary is very simplified, and yes, in many other ways he was a builder and a visionary.
Everything is both subjective and complicated, eh?
