Charlie Sava taught me how to swim, and I was one of the kids at McLaren Lodge along with my mother advocating for the pool name change. I don't remember Charlie as grumpy! You mention Dave Dobrinen in the podcast: Mr. Dobrinen was my friend's father, and he was a violin teacher, thus the Stradivarius comment. Mrs. Dobrinen and my mom were friends, too, and they introduced us to Larsen Pool. We were at the name changing ceremony, too. A typical summer day in SF - cold and foggy. Lol.
Mark Spitz came by one day to say hello to Charlie. Charlie was as proud as could be, and we were in awe to meet a gold medalist.
I am very thankful for Charlie's swim instruction. I am a good swimmer today because of him. Thanks for the memories.
