Fascinating -- I haven't encountered the Portola origin.

Makes sense, since during WWII, Richard's father was a pipe-fitter for a shipyard. So it was after the War, then, that they relocated to a "spec home on the western edge of the city, south of Golden Gate Park, in an area that had been mainly sand dunes."
