I don't know when the High/Low grades ended - when there were two starting dates for beginning school in Kindergarten. Back in the '30s and '40s the rule was if a child's birthday was before somewhere around the first of November - I don't remember the exact cutoff date - that child would start school in September. Those whose dates of birth were after that date would start school in February. It was thought those kids were likely to be too immature for a September start.

You said your mother's birthday was in June - She should have been a September starter. Did she maybe skip a half a year of Kindergarten or first grade?
