Some additional thoughts. My family home at 1226-44th Avenue was a couple of houses down from the first African American family. They could have been the first. Don't know for sure. My mother befriended them and they remained friends for years. I also remember walking home from Francis Scott Key and stopping at "Shirley's Ice Cream" on the corner of 44th & Judah. Mom walked every single day to the Busy Bee Market at 46th & Irving...across the street from the poultry market...live chickens brought in almost every day. Feathers everywhere in the area!
