Candis, thank you and the others for your memories about my brother Frank. While we honor veterans like Frank and myself, we may also think about how this wonderful nation showed its gratitude. We came home and learned about the GI Bill, a four-year college education largely funded by grateful citizens. For most of us that meant lifetime earnings beyond what we might have had otherwise. Then the GI Bill let us buy our first home with a lower interest rate. And for those who became civilian Government employees we found that our pensions were enhanced by adding our military time to civilian time.

Finally, every day I see prominently displayed in my home a folded American flag accompanied by the message "This flag is presented on behalf of a grateful nation and the United States Army as a token of appreciation for your loved one's honorable and faithful service."
