I went to West Portal Lutheran for two years (kindergarten and first grade) and then after a particularly nasty incident where I was literally DRAGGED from the church due to ingraving my initials in the church pew with a bobby pin (I was 5 and had been sitting in mandatory church for over an hour and a half listening to Pastor Jensen go one with his diatribe) that I succumbed to a single act of grafitti. ANYWAY...Mrs. Merril got into me but good. AND into my mother who gave her a ration as well. Bottome line: I left WPL a month later and transferred to a catholic school where, somewhat ironically, they were much, much more tolerant. Side note: Mrs. Merrill sent her daugher to catholic school for high school because I went to school with her. Funny, huh? Her daughter was quiet, polite and very nice. Unlike, sadly, my experiences of her mother. Important note: We cannot hold the actions of the parent against the child. BUT... Mrs. Merrill was a bonafide piece of work. EEEEVIILLLLL for sure!
