I also wonder what people thought of when the city was rebuilt after 1906. Of course I am sure that controversy over architecture abounded but in a time when natural disaster destroys everything rebuilding is mandatory.

Restoration of historic buildings should be up to contemporary safety codes but the visual should be of the original building.

Aesthetic modernization and modification of historic buildings makes as much sense as a restoration of Da Vinci's Mona Lisa by Jackson Pollock. It just should not be done!

We have a historic legacy that we need to preserve and it is fading fast from the SF landscape.
