Tough to narrow down to just five, the events already referenced on previous lists fall under the "he took my answer" catagory. Some others I can think of:

Drag racing on Friday nights at Great Highway (or Brotherhood Way/Arroyo before that). You think it's the Chevelle or Barracuda? Maybe the Challenger?

Busing of kids in the early-70's (Sunset kids go to Bayview schools, Mission District comes to the Richmond, etc.). Had a huge impact on enrollment levels at private schools, and influx of city dwellers moving to Peninsula.

BART ... ok, not so much a Western Neighborhood footprint, but the Daly City facility. While providing a new way to get downtown or across the bay, it also signaled a change to what was once best known for "Mathew's-Top-Of-The-Hill-Daly-City". Goodbye Toto's, goodbye Shoe Fair,...

The Golden Dragon restaurant massacre on Washington Street around '77 had repercussions out to the Richmond District at that time, including splintering rival gangs at Washington High.

Parking at The Circle. 'Nuf said.

The 49ers moving from their digs at Kezar across town to the 'Stick. Finally, a stadium with parking!!

The assassinations of George Moscone and Harvey Milk. Later, it was determined by a jury that an SI alum (see, always a western-SF angle) was radically altered by a twinkie.

OJ innocent....not an opinion, but another jury verdict on one of the city's more notable characters.

The demise of Fleishaker Pool out by the Zoo. Became good for skateboarding, but not much else.
