I had a similar experience. I was in first grade at St. Monicas. Sr. Celestine Mary was the teacher. I remember all the kids up front in a circle praying on their knees. I was in a seat near the wall in a row nearest the window. They had a large statue of the Virgin Mary up on a pedestal in the corner and the statue fell to the ground and broke into a bunch of pieces. Missed me, but for one small piece which I remember cut my left ankle and drew a little blood.
We were all sent home. My mother told me she was waiting for the bus near 6th ave and she saw the houses swaying from the street.
Had some plaster cracks around the house but survived it all.
