Film Screening: 5 Blocks by Dan Goldes and Robert Cortlandt WNP Event

May 21, 2020 6:30pm-8:30pm (Thursday) at Western Neighborhoods Project 1617 Balboa Street
Market Street was once the grandest boulevard in America. No stranger to civic celebrations since the 1900s and just minutes from City Hall, the area fell into decline and became home to the poorest population in San Francisco. The neighborhood is currently undergoing its most dramatic change in 50 years as tech companies, their employees, and the restaurants and stores that cater to them confront the realities of a neighborhood that still houses some of our most marginalized residents.

WNP will host a screening of 5 Blocks, a film by Dan Goldes and Robert Cortlandt who used our OpenSFHistory archive as a research tool to explore the complex questions of income disparity, changing demographics, and the very nature of place as they look at contemporary Market Street.

Join us to see how the past contextualizes the present, meet filmmaker Dan Goldes, and enjoy curated historical images of Market Street from OpenSFHistory. Tickets are $20 for non-members, $10 for members. Light snacks and refreshments provided.
