The Richmond District’s iconic Alexandria Theatre on Geary Boulevard and 18th Avenue turns 100 years old this year. Western Neighborhoods Project (WNP) and friends plan to celebrate this legendary movie palace with a night at the theater! Join us at the Balboa Theater on Sunday, November 26th at 6:00pm to commemorate the Alexandria on its actual 100th birthday with some of our favorite community historians.
This night of remembrance hosted by WNP will include historic footage of the neighborhood from the Prelinger Archives; short history talks by Woody LaBounty of San Francisco Heritage and theater historian Gary Parks, who will share how this Egyptian theater came to be in the Richmond; everything you need to know about neighborhood neon from Randall Ann Homan and Al Barna of San Francisco Neon; and an update about the current state of the Alexandria’s preservation by Katherine Petrin of the San Francisco Neighborhood Theatre Foundation. Plus, delightful musical entertainment from the Aloha Uke Squad!
Tickets are $20 each and proceeds from the evening will support all involved, including the Balboa Theater! Doors open at 5:30pm, so you have plenty of time to get refreshments from the Balboa concession stand and start your holiday shopping by purchasing merchandise at the WNP table in the lobby, including a brand-new enamel pin depicting the Alexandria!
