Western Neighborhoods Project Needs Your Help!

WNP is a grassroots community history organization focused on the western neighborhoods in San Francisco, also known as the Outside Lands. Co-founded in 1999 by David Gallagher and Woody LaBounty, two friends passionate about local history, it’s now stewarded by Executive Director Nicole Meldahl who was handpicked to succeed the organization’s founders in 2019. WNP has also managed an auxiliary program you probably know and love called OpenSFHistory, which has made over 51,000 historical images available to the public online, for free, since 2014.

Our board is an eclectic, dedicated group of fun-loving history folks who meet every six weeks. As a board member, you will help shape the future of WNP and have the autonomy of pursuing your own individual projects alongside other volunteers who help produce our podcast and videos; keep our websites, Outsidelands.org and OpenSFHistory.org, and social media channels updated; organize, promote, and manage public programs; and catalog the WNP and OpenSFHistory archival collections from our “Home for History” at 1617 Balboa Street in the Richmond District.

This is the organization’s first open call for board members EVER because we want our board to look more like the west side, including folks from different backgrounds with different perspectives. This is what gives San Francisco its unique identity and will help advance our community history work beyond the past and into a new decade.
