I vaguely remember a "ring-back" thing...I think it was a way of ensuring the telephone connection was intact, and that your telephone was in good working order???

We were quite spoiled back then, with such "modern" services. I remember being able to dial POPCORN to get the correct time! When I was too little to actually have someone to call, I enjoyed dialing that number and getting a response, because it made me feel very important.
(Wasn't the message something along the lines of, "At the sound of the gong/chime, the time will be...."?)

Also remember being able to talk to an always kind and helpful HUMAN Operator if there were problems in connecting to a number.
