Our family number in the Parkside District was OVerland 7073. The phone was an upright phone without any dialing. One had to give the operator the number you wished to call. We were on a party line and often when you picked up the phone to make a call someone would be on the line. Common curtesy said you should hang up and try in five minutes. Most of the time they were off the line, but not always.

My father's phone number at his pharmacy at Haight and Scott Streets was Park 200.

Of course this was in the 1930s and as time went on they put a number after the exchange and then later they went to digit dialing.
