LOmbard 6-4159 from the late 1940s through the early years of this millennium. Throughout the 1950s, we shared a party line with Mr. & Mrs. Vincent next door and the Nielsens across the street. In order to call one of them, you had to go through the Operator, though there was no extra charge for this. The party line set-up meant that calls had to be kept short, and it was generally understood that if another party line subscriber picked up their phone while you were talking, you would end your conversation before they tried again 5 minutes later. Telephone dial-up for Internet would never have been possible in the days of the party line!
