My absolute favorite part of the old aquarium was hanging over the railing and looking at the alligators/crocodiles in their habitat. (Like others, I cannot remember whether they were als or crocs...I just thought they were SO cool.)
That having been said, and though I would sorely miss that wonderful moat, I've admired the updates and renovations that have been done. These days, it takes a LOT of money to accomplish such things...so perhaps entry fees are now needed? Not living in SF any more I have no idea...
