Another change was announced last Tuesday that went by with nary a ripple: the old Fillmore West at Market and South Van Ness is going to be torn down to make way for more residences.

Located in the old Carousel Ballroom upstairs from an auto dealership, it was Bill Graham's flagship venue for rock bands from mid-1968 to 1971. While lying on its hardwood floors I saw the Dead, Quicksilver, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe, Led Zeppelin, Joe Cocker, Taj Mahal, and many many others.

With the pending demolition of Fillmore West we'll have lost three of the original great rock venues in the City -- Fillmore West, Winterland, and Family Dog on the Great Highway. Only the reincarnated original Fillmore Auditorium and the cannibalized site of the Avalon Ballroom soldier on.
