The LA Times reported earlier this week that St. Ignatius College Prep is in the midst of completing $6 million worth of earthquake retrofit work on some of the original 1960s-era campus buildings, in order to comply with new laws. The 4-story faculty residence, the 37th Avenue building that is closest to Pacheco Street, is no longer fully utilized (only 17 Jesuit residents, mostly retired, in a building that has a capacity of 80), and is scheduled for demolition & replacement with a smaller building housing school offices. Architects pointed out that retrofitting the present structure would be more costly than simply demolishing it & putting up a new building designed for today's needs.
