It's an example of a once-familiar reference that's now gone out of fashion. I remember hearing it as a kid when my dad worked for Fireman's Fund Insurance, and they had a column in their glossy monthly magazine about visiting company dignitaries titled "Visiting Firemen."

We could start a whole thread about phrases from our salad days in the 1950s and '60s that would totally flummox more recent generations, like "number please" or "pull an alarm box" or "vacuum assisted wipers."
