I'm gonna sit right down and write myself a letter
And make believe it came from you
I'm gonna write words, oh, so sweet
They're gonna knock me off my feet…
Yes, our old BB Hood has seemingly moved onto the corner of Entropy and Ennui and kudos to Tim, Frank and Paul for organizing a Thanksgiving Block Party. Nostalgia not being what it used to be, I am still touched deeply by the friends and neighbors of yore, who’d share their past, present and future freely in a friendly spirit interwoven with curiosity and care. It was the most affordable neighborhood in The City with HOA dues minimal at best, while worth its weight in BitCoin. Thanks to Nicole and the Board for keeping the WNP so vital and connected in so many other social media venues.
While Covid certainly tossed a turd in the punchbowl of holiday gatherings, it is nice to crawl out of confinement, look around like Punxsutawney Phil and savor relations again. I thank Tim for kick-starting the Holidaze, Frank for his tasty treatise on togetherness and Paul for sounding the bell which will hopefully bring others to gather in the square.
I started cooking today; my Rotary Club prepares dinner for a local program with 15 homeless gents once monthly. I was doing baked potatoes (it’s the Irish in me; certainly not the diabetic) and read the SOS that no one had signed up for the main course.
Insta-Cart to the rescue and I was able to score and roast 5 chickens before 5pm. I use my mom’s recipe of garlic, fresh rosemary and Worcestershire ground into a paste then smeared onto the birds and roasted to 165F. Like Mighty Mouse, I saved the day but truth be told, I get more from this than the gents. And since Covid, I’ve upped my cooking game considerably and enjoy feeding folks; just ask our 3 dogs whom I spoil daily with Happy Hour. Granted, they don’t drink much but the cheese and crackers are their claimed eminent domain.
That said, we are headed to my sister’s in Menlo Park for T-Day and she can cook like Julia’s child. The downside is she has a houseful and no leftovers. Being of the belief that leftovers are the best part of Thanksgiving, we will cook a complete diner on Friday with enough left overs to make turkey sandwiches, enchiladas and chili: I can feel the Tryptophan haze as I write.
I hope each of you and yours will have a day to be thankful for and even with Covid, conspiracies and constitutional crises, the moments of our hearts will stand out, stand up and stand the test of time.
Cheers & Happy Thanksgiving,
