It was the summer before my last semester at Lincoln (I was in a fall graduating class) when the family and a buddy went to the Islands so we could have a couple weeks surfing. We did take the trip out to the memorial and at that time my Dad remarked that a cousin rested in peace below us...something I had not known. Then a day later we went out to the PunchBowl National Cemetery where by chance my Dad found my cousin's name on the monument to the Pearl Harbor dead...something the family did not know. The other link to the event was that the husband of another cousin on my Dad's side was an executive officer on the first destroyer that "made steam" and sailed out of Pearl to cheers of those on shore in search of the enemy.
