Grew up on 3rd Avenue - spent a lot of time getting thrown out of the building as we were too stupid to stay away from the rear legs at the end of each occupied stall.

My favorite memory is the "Push to Cross" button mounted on the traffic light at Fulton Street. It was mounted high so only the people on horseback could easily reach it. If you tried though you push it as a mere pedestrian to change the traffic light. Cars on Fulton Street would then see a red horseshoe instead of just a round light.

Never seen anything like it anywhere else.
