Yeah, the vintage cars helped to set the tone in depicting that particular era.
As for the manual typewriter - that was my personal bit of "symbolism." I spent many a Saturday afternoon in my friend's breakfast nook, where we labored over writing essays and term papers - during our high school and college years - and using a typewriter very similar to the one in the picture. (If memory serves, it was a Royal typewriter.)
