I lived in Berkeley 1971 to 1975 and frequently traveled over to see the foreign and indie US films at the Surf. We had at least one art film house in the East Bay on the north side of the UC campus (Rose St.) but sometimes the title was only at the Surf. They had the coffeeshop then, too. Not too far away was a fantastic Vietnamese restaurant (not many around in those days) that served a heavenly Dungeness crab smothered in garlic and butter.
