Roy, I wouldn't define this individual as a "character" however, I do recall as a child in the late 50's, there was an African American gentleman that hung around Powell and Market which I believe he sold pencils. The reason why I recall this person is that he had no legs. Basically, he had only his trunk. He would sit on a little wooden platform that had four little wheels on it and he would push himself around using his hands. Do you recall him?
