That was about a year before my arrival in this world, but my older brother was four at the time. He was with our grandmoter at the corner grocery store on Crocker Avenue in Daly City when the earthquake struck.
Not wanting to frighten him any more than necessary, Grandma told him that a truck had hit the store. It seems to me that this explanation would have been seen by a toddler as a more immediate threat than an earthquake, but Grandma was just trying to do the right thing.
