Playland Auction, September 1972

This is random KPIX television footage of the auction of Playland rides and memorabilia after the San Francisco amusement park closed in September 1972. The Alpine Racer ride: $100! Anyone?

We've done some editing just to put it in some order. The woman who is interviewed about winning the carousel didn't eventually consumate the deal. The carousel was bought by Marianne Stevens, who relocated it to Long Beach, California. Later it was returned to San Francisco and is operated at Yerba Buena Gardens.

The older man is Wilhelm Smit, a ride operator at Playland since the 1920s!

Thanks to James Reid and Reuben Maness at KPIX who kindly made this footage available to us!
